How to calibrate the trackpad on a mid 2009 MacBook Pro.

Note: This guide may apply to other MacBook Pro sizes and models, but this was written specifically for the MacBook I have, instructions may vary if you choose to do this with a different model.

Why would you want to do this?

MacBook Pro models before 2015 (Also MacBook Air models before 2017, and the MacBook neo) Use a trackpad that has mechanical clicks. The depth of the click is controlled by a small screw and over time that screw can loosen causing your trackpad to feel loose and a way for debris to enter which will cause issues if you store your computer vertically.

<br /> What you will need

1. a screwdriver with interchangable bits
2. a plastic pry tool, if you do not have one a clean fingernail will work also
3. Phillips PH00 bit
4. tri-point Y00 bit
5. Torx T6 bit

<br /> Accessing the trackpad.

1. place your MacBook lid side down with the hinge facing away from you on a flat, clean, static free surface.
2. Using a phillips head PH00 bit on your screwdriver remove the 10 Phillips head screws from the bottom of the MacBook.
3. Lift off the bottom cover, it should have seperated from the frame of the laptop slightly, if not, you can use a thin pry tool if needed. Place the bottom cover aside.
4. Gently disconnect the connector for the battery using a plastic pry tool or clean fingernail.
5. Using a tri-point Y00 bit on your screwdriver, remove the 2 screws holding in the battery.
6. Pull the plastic tab found on the top of the battery and lift the battery out of the computer.

Calibrating the trackpad

1. Prepare your screwdriver by inserting a t6 torx bit into the screwdriver. This is needed as the next few steps must be preformed with one hand
2. Open the MacBook to about 45 degrees, with the computer still upside down and the lid making full contact with the surface the computer is on. Keep supporting the laptop with one hand
3. Tighten the large torx screw found in the bottom center of the trackpad assembly on the inside of the laptop in small increments, clicking the trackpad a couple of times after each tighten.
4. Once you no longer put pressure on the trackpad and have it move without clicking, stop tightening the screw.

To reassemble the MacBook, follow the "Accessing the trackpad" instructions in reverse.
