Upgrading Thermals! - MacBook Pro 2021 16"
MacBook Pro 16" (2021) · @polar · 10 Jul 2026
When we first get a new Mac, it’s natural to wonder about its performance. In this guide, I’ll show you how to upgrade the thermals to help keep it running cool.
What you will need:
1. A P5 pentalobe screwdriver
2. Thermal pads of your choice
Right, lets get to the guide now!
Step 1: Carefully unscrew the bottom plate. Be gentle to avoid pushing too hard or stripping the screws."
Step 2: Remove the bottom plate. Once the screws are out, gently pry off the bottom cover. It is held on by internal clips, so you may need to use a plastic opening tool to carefully pop it free.
Step 3: Disconnect the battery. Before touching any internal components, always disconnect the battery for safety, or not if you are dangerous like me. 🙄
Step 4: Access the heatsink. Locate the heatsink covering the processor. You are putting your thermal pad on there to disperse the heat off it and to the chassis as it is good at dispersing heat due to the size.
Step 5: Apply the new thermal pad. Cut your new thermal pads to the correct size and place them on the heatsink
Step 6: Reassemble. Carefully screw the heatsink back into place, reconnect the battery (if you did that), and snap the bottom cover back on before securing it with the pentalobe screws.
Then once its off you have full access to the machine.
Now you stick down or lay your thermal pad across an area of your choice, I recommend putting it on the metal cooler/heatsink but the SoC is also good.
Then put your panel back on and screw it back on.
There you have it! You should of increased temps by around 5~10%.
Happy Modding,
Polar.
